It’s not fair.
Let’s just start off by acknowledging that. But it is reality: with more American women doing business abroad there are some fashion issues that must be addressed.
Men, they can just throw on a suit and be done with it. Women have too much code, tory burch, culture and sexual politics wrapped up in their apparel to be so cavalier about clothing.
Saks Fifth Avenue in Boca Raton recently held a “How to Dress for International Business Success” seminar featuring Florida corporate attorneys Jennifer Roeper and Olga Pina of the mega-firm Fowler White Boggs to help women avoid style pitfalls on business trips in other cultures.
The two lawyers are in the Organization of Women in International Trade (Roeper is president of the Tampa Bay chapter and Pina is on the board) which sparked the seminars ? part legal colloquium, miu miu, part fashion show.
Roeper specializes in immigration law while Pina focuses on acquisitions and mergers.
“A lot of people think about business but not the clothing, salvatore ferragamo,” said Pina. “But your appearance is part of your negotiation. It says a lot about your experience, authority and wealth.”
Here are some common fashion traps to avoid:
CASUAL ACQUAINTANCE ? “People assume that casual applies the same abroad as it does here,” said Pina. “The concept of ‘Casual Friday’ doesn’t exist everywhere. We like to show that jeans are appropriate, christian louboutin evening, but it’s better if they look more like denim slacks. For example, people in Latin American countries are very brand conscious. What you are wearing should look important.”

DOWN-LOW DRESSING ? “Women traveling to Muslim countries [need to wear clothing] that hide the female form ? loose and flowing, rene caovilla,” said Roeper. “You need to hide your shoulder and you may need to wear a hijab around your head.”
STANDING OUT ? “Here it’s all about the individual, vibram five fingers,” said Pina. “But in Asia the culture is more group oriented. In Japan you don’t want to stand out with flashy colors. Tall women don’t wear high heels.”
