Robert gave a perceptive interview on Radio Studio Q last week, one of the most open and enjoyable interviews we have seen in the round of recent media appearances – check out the whole interview here;
Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience continues across America this month so far a small sprinkling of You Tube clips have surfaced. If you are attending the show we would welcome a full review. Here’s an excellent interview with Jason prior to the first show which also features veteran writer and Zep biographer Ritchie Yorke.
TBL was sad to hear that Soul, gospel and rock singer Solomon Burke had died on October 10 at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. He was 70.
Burke, who was a Grammy winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, had been due to perform together with the Dutch band The Dijk at the Paradiso in Amsterdam.
Solomon Burke wrote the song Everybody Needs Somebody To Love in 1964 and it was later covered by a variety of artists including The Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett -and perhaps most famously by the Blues Brothers. Led Zeppelin often incorporated the song within the live Whole Lotta Love medley circa 72/73 and The Firm also covered it live.
He also recorded the hit song Cry to Me for the movie Dirty Dancing and the emotive None Of Us Are Free. The late Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler once described Soloman as ”The best soul singer of all time”.
Here’s a great clip of Shake Rattle And Roll from Jools Holland’s Hogmanay in 2003 featuring Solomon Burke, Tom Jones, Jeff Beck and Robert Plant:
And finely, here is a clip of the Carlos Santana and Chris Cornell version of Whole Lotta Love, taken from Santana’s new album Guitar Heaven, an album of cover versions of some of the greatest guitar anthems of all time. Go to www.santana.com for more samples including the excellent I Ain’t Superstitious featuring Jonny Lang
